A cynics perspective of Experiential Development, by the MD

"As far as experiential development goes, I began my career by holding it in contempt. Why? Because it was advocated by one of those gung-holier-than-thou types who thought that all you had to do was push people way beyond their physical limits, criticise them for letting the side down, and depend too much on the (i) forming, storming, norming, performing processes and (ii) cognitive dissonance reduction ('It hurt like hell and I felt foolish, but I stayed there so it must have done me good).

Also, I saw a fair amount of 'training', which was based on the simple proposition that 'you didn't think you could walk on fire before this course, so when you get back to work you'll find there are lots of other things you can do as well.'

I became a convert when I saw it done properly. 'PROPERLY' means that you use the outdoors as an extraordinarily immediate medium, free from 'classroom coping behaviour,' in which you carefully construct a metaphor for a work situation, and in reviewing you concentrate on using the metaphor to make the link. 'PROPERLY' means that you don't want people to be so terrified of coping at the physical level that they have no time for absorbing the real lessons."
